Now that flight bans are gradually being lifted, we are doing our utmost to ensure that you can once again experience the excitement of travel in a post-Covid-19 scenario. In line with the recommendations of local and international authorities, we have taken all necessary measures, invested in new technologies, and re-trained our front-liners to allow you to feel safe and secure every step of the way from check-in to boarding.

While we are doing our very best to protect you, we also need your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe airport environment for all our guests and team of dedicated employees. OUR EFFORTS TO SAFEGUARD YOUR HEALTH

Social Distancing Measures

Our new signage and floor markings have been installed to help you find your way around the terminal, whilst keeping safe distances. We have also reorganised our seating in a way that meets social distancing requirements and installed protective panes at customer service desks to help limit unnecessary contact between our guests and front-line staff. Passenger flows have also been restructured in order to limit the unnecessary crossing of paths of travelling and non-travelling guests.

New Technologies

An investment in new technologies will help us deliver on our promise of protecting your health. Technologies in place will allow you to scan your passport and boarding pass at check-in, minimising interaction with our front-line staff as much as possible. Through our agglomeration detection technology, on the other hand, we will be alerted in real-time if social distancing is not maintained by passengers, permitting the team on the floor to take prompt action. Thermal screening cameras will help us detect passengers having a high temperature, with the least inconvenience possible.

Cleaning & Hygiene

Our cleaning and disinfection schedules have been aligned to the recommendations of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). This means that we are cleaning and disinfecting our terminal – especially surfaces that are regularly touched such as buttons and handles – more frequently and intensively. Special attention is also being given to the cleaning of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) units and testing of centralised drinking water distribution systems.

We also coordinate our efforts with those of all our airport stakeholders to ensure that the same hygiene and cleanliness standards are upheld across the terminal.

While we are doing our best to keep the terminal spotless, remember that personal hygiene is crucial as well. Clean your hands frequently by washing them with soap and water – our washrooms are equipped with touchless facilities – or by using the alcohol-based rub available at the sanitising stations around the terminal. It is also recommended that you have your own 100ml hand sanitising gel bottle handy throughout the journey, which can also be carried through security.

Our Airport Care Team

While we have put a lot of effort into limiting unnecessary contact between airport guests and staff, we have assembled and trained an Airport Care Team, whose primary role will be the facilitation of your journey whilst ensuring that health and safety recommendations are being observed by all airport guests. Members of this team will be roaming the terminal and wearing light blue vests in order for our guests to identify them easily should they need assistance.

GETTING TO THE AIRPORT & TRAVELLING THROUGH THE TERMINAL

Plan Ahead

Remember that it is obligatory to wear a face mask inside the terminal, and that it is recommended that you change your mask every 4 hours. Pack enough face masks in your hand luggage for your entire trip including the time spent at the airport of origin, the time spent on the aircraft, and the time spent at the airport of your destination. Please be informed that, while the use of face masks is obligatory on board an aircraft, airlines may prohibit the use of face shields or visors.   

Be sure to arrive at the terminal at least two hours before your flight departure time. This will allow you enough time for all airport processes such as check-in and security screening as well as any Covid-related procedures in place. However, it is recommended that check-in formalities are completed online in accordance with the instructions of your airline.

Should you be experiencing any one of the following Covid-19 symptoms – a fever, a cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell – on the day of your travels, we urge you to act responsibly and postpone your trip. The Main Touch Points of your Journey: What to Expect

Before Check-in

  • Complete online check-in formalities in accordance with the instructions of your airline
  • It is recommended to travel light
  • Say your goodbyes outside of the terminal building; non-travelling guests will not be allowed to accompany you inside
  • There is only one designated smoking area after security, which may be found next to Gate 1 inside the Departures Hall
  • Put on your face mask before entering the terminal building (while the use of face masks is also obligatory on board an aircraft, airlines may prohibit the use of face shields or visors)
  • Expect to be subjected to body temperature screening before entering the Check-in Hall. If your body temperature exceeds 37.2oC, you will be interviewed by the Public Health Authorities and may be asked to leave the airport.

 

At Check-In

  • Keep a safe distance by following the signs and floor markings
  • Have your boarding pass handy, preferably on your mobile phone
  • It is recommended that you check in your bags
  • Newly introduced technologies will enable you to scan your passport and boarding pass at the Check-in Desks without interacting with staff. However, should you need a helping hand, do look out for members of our Airport Care team wearing light blue vests for guidance.

               

At the Security Screening Area

  • Keep a safe distance by following the signage and floor markings
  • Security checks may take a little longer than usual; please be patient
  • We will do our best to avoid contact screening, but this may be necessary for safety reasons
  • While our security screening trays are cleaned frequently, we recommend you clean your hands with the alcohol-based rub available at the sanitising stations found as you make your way out of the security screening area.

 

Departures Areas & Boarding

  • Keep a safe distance by following the signage and floor markings, even when in outlets and eateries
  • A designated smoking area is available next to Gate 1
  • Water fountains are currently unavailable for your safety
  • We have reorganised seating for the purposes of social distancing; unavailable seating is clearly marked
  • The wait to use the washrooms may be longer than usual; we apologise for this and ask for your understanding. Remember to wash your hands with soap and water after using the restrooms and otherwise as frequently as possible.
  • Boarding processes may take longer than usual; please be patient. Approach the Gate in accordance with the given instructions.
  • Should you need a helping hand, do look out for members of our Airport Care team wearing light blue vests for guidance.
  • Continue maintaining safe distances on aircraft coaches

 

Arrival in Malta & Baggage Reclaim

  • If you experience any of the Covid-19 symptoms while in flight, inform the crew immediately and do not leave your seat.
  • Expect to be subjected to body temperature screening immediately after arrival. If your body temperature exceeds 37.2 oC, you can expect to be interviewed by Public Health officials. All guests will be asked to fill in a passenger locator form, which would enable the health authorities to trace them swiftly should the need arise.
  • Keep a safe distance by following the signage and floor markings within the terminal building
  • At Baggage Reclaim, you may have to wait for guests who would have arrived earlier before approaching the belt to pick up your luggage. Please maintain a safe distance here.
  • Once you pick up your luggage upon arrival and pass through customs, proceed to leave the terminal as soon as possible to reduce the risk of virus transmission, unless you need to make use of the services of the rental car desks, the taxi reservation booth, or the tour operator desks, all of which are located within the Welcomers’ Hall.
Transport Options

Taxis & Public Transport 

If you choose to take a taxi or the bus to get to the airport, remember that you would need to wear your mask for the duration of the entire journey. It is also recommended that you wear your face mask while waiting for the bus at your bus stop. Car Rentals

If you choose to rent a car during your stay in Malta, you may be asked by the car rental company to drop off your car keys at the airport. In this case,  please deposit your keys at the MIA Information Desk located at Check-in prior to departure.

The airport’s customer service representatives will have the keys returned to the appropriate car rental company. This service is limited to the following car rental companies represented at the airport:

A Few things to Keep in Mind

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you will have to keep your mask on – covering both your nose and mouth – inside the terminal. Only children who are under 6 years of age and people having a valid medical reason are exempt from wearing a face mask. At the terminal, you must dispose of face masks or gloves within the refuse containers provided only.

Remember that the use of face masks becomes more effective in stopping the spread of viral particles when coupled with other measures, including maintaining safe physical distances, observing coughing and sneezing etiquette, and maintaining excellent hand hygiene. It is recommended that you change your mask every 4 hours, so do not forget to pack enough face masks for your entire journey. Please be informed that, while the use of face masks is obligatory on board an aircraft, airlines may prohibit the use of face shields or visors.   

New signage and floor markings have been introduced throughout the terminal to help you keep the required distances and guide you in relation to the use of washrooms and maximum lift capacity.

Shopping & Dining at the Airport

For your safety and security, we have limited access to certain landside retail and F&B outlets that were previously also accessible to visitors to travelling guests only. We encourage you to heed the instructions on the signage installed in our outlets and to ask members of staff for assistance should you have any difficulties. Whenever possible, please pay using a credit card or mobile phone to avoid the unnecessary handling of bank notes and coins.

If you are travelling with the little ones in tow, remember that children under 6 years of age are exempt from wearing a face mask inside the terminal building.

We have two parenting rooms available; one is located within the Check-In Hall and a second room is located at Departures. We have recently increased the cleaning frequency of these rooms, with special attention to all surfaces, nappy changers and nappy bins, in order to protect the health and safety of our little guests.

Journey Facilitation Service

Our journey facilitation service for passengers with autism is once again being offered. This service must be booked at least 48 hours prior to one’s flight by filling the form available here and submitting the requested documents.

La Valette Members & VIP services

If you are a La Valette Club member or plan on using any one of VIP services, please note the below:

Pre-Booking of Lounge
All guests who wish to use the lounge when they travel next, are requested to book at least 24 hours before their trip by sending an email, including their flight number and guest details, on info@lavaletteclub.com. This will allow the La Valette team to ascertain that social distancing requirements can be observed in the lounges. An email confirming lounge availability or otherwise will be sent by the team.

Please note that the use of mask is not obligatory while at the lounge.

VIP Services
All VIP services, such as meet and greet and porterage, are also being offered subject to availability. Guests are reminded to book these services at least 24 hours prior to their trip via email on info@lavaletteclub.com and not through the La Valette website, until further notice.

Guests booking and making use of the chauffeur service, are reminded that face masks must be worn in the vehicle and that each vehicle will only take up to two guests and a driver.

Complimentary drinks & snacks
In line with the authorities’ guidelines for catering establishments, the buffet option at our Departures lounge will be replaced by waiter service until further notice. Guests will be assigned a table upon checking in at the Departures lounge and will be served by the La Valette team after placing their order. Only complimentary beverages will be made available at the Arrivals lounge.

Departure Lounge Terrace
Until further notice, the lounge terrace will be a no smoking area. Please note that all areas within the terminal, including terraces, will be no smoking areas until further notice.

Unavailability of Publications & iPads
Newspapers, magazines, and iPads will be unavailable to limit our guests’ contact with common surfaces. Should you wish to leave feedback or suggestions, please ask for a comment card and stationery at reception.

FLYING TO MALTA & YOUR STAY HERE

Arriving in Malta

Travellers arriving directly from one of the specified countries and regions which have been identified by the Maltese Government as safe for travel to and from Malta, will not be required to observe a 14-day quarantine.

They will be asked, however, to declare that they would have lived in the country of origin for 4 weeks prior to travelling. Guests arriving in Malta can expect to be subjected to body temperature screening immediately after arrival. If your body temperature exceeds 37.2oC, you can expect to be interviewed by Public Health officials.

All guests are asked to download, print and complete a travel declaration and passenger locator form, both of which are available here, and present them upon their arrival at our airport. The information provided would enable the health authorities to trace travelling guests swiftly should the need arise. Further details about passenger locator forms should be sought from the Public Health Authorities.

Once you pick up your luggage upon arrival and pass through customs, proceed to leave the terminal as soon as possible to reduce the risk of virus transmission, unless you need to make use of the services of the rental car desks, the taxi reservation booth, or the tour operator desks, all of which are located within the Welcomers’ Hall.

The Malta Tourism Authority’s tourist information office, which is also located within the Welcomers’ Hall, will re-open on Wednesday 1st July. The office will be open from Monday to Sunday between 10am and 9pm.

If you fall ill or experience one of these symptoms – a fever, a cough, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell – during your stay in Malta, please call the local health authorities on +356 2132 4086 immediately. If you are staying at a hotel, please inform a member of staff immediately.

Passenger Declarations

All passengers travelling to Malta are required by the Superintendence of Public Health for Malta to complete:

 

  1. the Public Health Travel Declaration Form
  2. the Passenger Locator Form 

 

and hand over both forms to the Aircraft Crew or drop the Forms within the deposit boxes available on exit from the Terminal Temperature Screening Points following arrival in Malta.

The information provided by passengers will enable the Public Health Authorities to trace and contact travelling guests swiftly should the need arise.

Bars & Clubs

Bars and clubs re-opened their doors to the public on 5th June 2020.

Ferry Service to Gozo

If you are planning on crossing over to Gozo, remember that you will not be allowed to board the ferry without a face mask. Your face mask must be worn during the ferry ride as well as at the waiting and disembarkation areas.

Museums & Cultural Sites

Museum and cultural site operators can exercise the right of refusal of entry into a museum to visitors if they are visibly unwell or have respiratory symptoms.

Restaurants

If you’re going to dine out at a restaurant, it is recommended that you make a reservation beforehand since eateries are operating with a reduced seating capacity in line with the authorities’ guidelines. You may also want to look out for a Covid-19 compliance sticker awarded by the Malta Tourism Authority before you choose your restaurant. This sticker proves that the establishment is compliant with Covid-19 protocols. Restaurant owners have the obligation to refuse entry to people whose temperature is above 37.2°C.

Transport

You are required to wear a face mask while using taxis, public transport, and when waiting at the bus stop. While you are strongly encouraged to purchase a Tallinja Card, should you choose to pay by cash on the bus you are required to have the exact fare as no change can be given by the driver.

FLIGHT & DESTINATION INFORMATION

Destinations

On the 1st of July 2020, Malta International Airport will be resuming operations to a limited number of countries which have been identified by government as safe for travel to and from Malta. Any travel bans which are currently in place locally are due to be lifted on the 15th of July 2020.

However, note that:

  • The countries identified as safe for travel are likely to have their own health and safety protocols in place. Before booking a flight, we recommend that you speak with an airline representative for guidance in relation to this. Airline contact details may be found here.

AIRPORT VISITORS

Dropping off / Picking Up Someone

Please note that access to the terminal is controlled and largely limited to travelling guests only. Exceptions will be made in special circumstances for a visitor to accompany a travelling guest inside the terminal building; these circumstances include dropping off / picking up a minor and dropping off / picking up a person with reduced mobility.

Shopping and Dining at the Airport

All outlets within the terminal building are following the authorities’ health and safety recommendations in an effort to protect your wellbeing. When visiting the airport to shop or eat at one of the F&B outlets, remember to follow the signage installed within the respective outlet and to wear your face mask. Whenever possible, please pay using a credit card or mobile phone to avoid the unnecessary handling of bank notes and coins.

The access to certain outlets that were previously accessible to non-travelling visitors has been restricted to travelling guests and airport employees only, to limit the unnecessary crossing of paths of travelling and non-travelling guests.
